What is Mizizi?

Mizizi (pronounced Mee-ZEE-Zee) is the Swahili word for roots, symbolizing strength, nourishment, and deep connection. Just as strong roots sustain life, we believe in building strong foundations within our communities—through food, education, and shared experiences. Mizizi is more than a farm; it’s a movement dedicated to making fresh, local produce accessible to all while fostering meaningful connections between people and the land.

Our
Story

Mizizi Farm began with a dream to grow food for our family. It started with three raised beds, totaling 96 square feet, in a community garden where we cultivated enough to meet our family’s needs. Through Fresh Roots 614 and a grant for new growers, we expanded our efforts, growing over 100 pounds of fresh produce that we proudly distributed to the Broad Street Presbyterian Church pantry. What started as a small family project quickly grew into a strong desire to feed and nourish the community, sparking conversations about food access and sustainability. As Fresh Roots expanded, the need for a dedicated nonprofit arm became clear, leading to the creation of Mizizi Farm—a space focused on education, programming, and fostering community through food and farming. From three raised beds to a thriving movement, Rooted Village Farm embodies the power of small beginnings to create lasting impact.
